Essential Medicines and Supplies

Medicine That Reaches Where It's Needed Most

HIRF sent its first shipment of medicines and supplies to Sierra Leone in 2005. In the two decades since, that effort has grown into one of HIRF’s largest and most consistent programs — now delivering more than 10 containers of essential medicines and supplies to health facilities across the country each year. This effort ensures hundreds of thousands of patients receive treatment for critical and chronic health conditions.

In 2025, HIRF supported 55 health facilities nationwide — both government and faith-based — with medicines and supplies, shipping over 30 metric tons in total.

HIRF prioritizes medicines that support women and child health — including emergency medicines for maternal care, such as those used to treat postpartum hemorrhage and preeclampsia. With the rise in reported cases of noncommunicable diseases, HIRF has also prioritized medicines for hypertension and diabetes.

Since outreach is a critical part of how health facilities reach their communities, HIRF also provides Essential Health Kits containing a range of medicines to support outreach visits.

Supplies such as masks, gowns, and gloves — including nearly 400,000 masks and 515,000 pairs of gloves in 2025 — are also included, so that supported facilities can maintain rigorous Infection, Protection, and Control (IPC) standards.

This work is made possible through partnerships with organizations including Brother’s Brother Foundation, MAP International, International Health Partners, the Catholic Medical Mission Board, and the ROW Foundation, who help ensure a steady, reliable supply of essential medicines reaches the facilities that need them most.

"When I saw the donated medicines arrive, I was very happy. These medicines help us a lot. Without this support, we would not be able to help as many vulnerable people as we do."
